Relativism, Value-freedom and the Sociology of Science

چکیده
Since its inception in the work of the classical social theorists, the sociology of knowledge—or as some would prefer, of belief—has generated an extensive array of debates about relativism. A central question has been whether the very existence of social determinants for beliefs makes it impossible to regard them as true or rational in any absolute sense, and this has proved especially contentious in the case of scientific beliefs, at least for the many who, whilst happily conceding some form of relativism for moral and political beliefs, are loath to accept a relativist view of science. Hence, if the social determination of beliefs does entail relativism, and scientific or cognitive relativism is to be avoided, definite limits must he placed upon the legitimate domain of inquiry for a sociology of belief. It must confine itself to the study of nonscientific beliefs, among which may perhaps also he included the results of quite clearly defective or spurious attempts at science.

Relativism in the Sociology of Knowledge
This study is going to investigate the problem of relativism in the writings of Karl Mannheim and David Bloor. These two scholars are important confessors of the sociology of knowledge. Mannheim began to apply the notion of relationism instead of relativism. Some critics believed to understand this object, others talked about the lack of real differences. My first aim is to differentiate these ...

Stephen Brush once asked, “Should the history of science be rated ‘X’?” Well, times have changed. Now controversy reigns over the role of sociology in the science classroom. Here, I profile several dimensions of the sociology of science and survey recent efforts by philosophers to address its most radical claims. In respecting the opposing poles of this contentious debate, I contend that it is ...

Best known for his pioneering study Distinction: A Social Critique of the Judgement of Taste, in which the aesthetic attitude of disinterestedness is accounted for as the expression of a class ethos, Bourdieu has become something of an icon of relativism. In thus effecting a Bakhtinian 'discrowning' of official hierarchies of the arts, he is often celebrated for his concern to place all tastes,...

SIR — Far from being dominated by scepticism about science, as Harry Collins claims, mainstream philosophy of science opposes the relativism that Collins decries. We are both philosophers of biology, a field that analyses key biological concepts such as species and genes, dissects theoretical debates in biology and examines emerging fields such as systems biology. This work often involves criti...
